ARE YOU INTERESTED IN RADIO-CONTROLLED MODELS?
If you live in the Valley area, Valley R/C is the Model Club to join.
Valley R/C Model Club, Inc. was formed in 1965 to foster, expand, and perpetuate the practice of safe R/C modeling and the spirit of good fellowship among all modelers.
VRCMC is an Academy of Model Aeronautics chartered radio control club. Our primary interest is flying model airplanes and helicopters. Some members also enjoy R/C cars and boats.
Our membership is comprised of people of all ages and professions. Club activities are posted at our flying site in Round Top Park south of Athens, PA.
Contrary to much advertising, flying R/C aircraft is not a ‘buy today – fly tomorrow’ hobby. We can help you get a good start on a fun filled sport. Members will share knowledge and help you in the selection, assembly and flying of your first model.
Contact one of our officers to learn more about our Club and the R/C hobby. Guests are always welcome at our bi-monthly meetings and at our flying field in RTP.
MEMBERSHIP DUES

Celebration & Flying Sunday – August 7 at VRCMC RTP Field – 3pm

Valley R/C Members John Kunte and Dan Luchaco plan to be at RTP Field on Sunday at 3pm to get their August Flight in.

All are invited to help them celebrate because this will be the 500th Month in a row that John & Dan have flown since January 1975.

If you do the math that is 41 years and 8 months of flying at least one time a month. The vast majority of flights were outdoors and powered by nitro engine equipped planes.

Dan estimates he has used less than 499 different planes to get these flights in but he is not sure of the exact number.

HISTORY:   In January 1975 Valley R/C President Bob Dean proposed a challenge to the club members to fly at least once a month each month in 1975. Members who completed the challenge would then be a Member of the Valley R/C Nut Club and they would receive recognition of this feat at the annual club banquet in February.

INFO: Nut Club Members receive a trophy made out of some type of nut. A walnut, peanut, hex nut or perhaps the more aerodynamic wing nut were used in the early awards. 41+ years of the awards has resulted in quite a variety of styles and themes. On the average over the years 4 to 12 club members qualify for the nut awards.

COMMENTS: Electric powered planes have made the challenge a bit easier the past few years. Indoor Flying sites also take away some of the challenge but John and Dan are quite sure they have flown outdoors at least once each month over the years. Vinnie Q always said all flights should be outdoors and with a nitro engine but he changed his tune after he bought an electric powered Champ. John has a place to fly next to his house so he has probably flown more than once in some of the colder months too. Club Members designated the first Sunday of the winter months as their target date because if you wait until the last day of the month sometimes the weather is not your friend. One of Dan’s memorable flights was when he was driving home from MI and realized it was the last day of the month and he would not be home before dark and he had not flown that month. That flight was made with his nitro powered Raptor heli with the aid of his outdoor patio lights and the flight was not too high or far away. Thankfully the neighbors saw no reason to question the .50 OS tuned pipe engine running at 10pm on a dark Monday night. At least none came outside to say anything. Another session he remembers was a Sunday afternoon flight at the Nichols NY Field in a January when the thermometer on Bud Booser’s flight box fuel can showed –13F. On the plus side the sun was out, the wind was calm and the snow was only a foot deep. Electric starters help and so does warming the engine cylinder up under the tailpipe of the car when the temps are below freezing.

THE RECORD: We are aware of a former member of the Binghamton NY Modelers of Binghamton Club who started his monthly flight streak in January 1965 but he passed away more than 10 years ago. That member was Myron Carey from Endwell NY. We do not know if John and Dan’s 500 Months is a Guiness World Record but we figure 500 months of anything is worth mentioning and celebrating. John is age 84 and Dan is 66 and both plan to keep counting the months as long as they can. John plans to fly a DeBolt Jenny that has a newer wing but most of it is 1966 vintage and Dan is gonna fly an Ace Foam Wing WW1 Biplane that his Dad George built and flew in 1969. George passed away in 1970. They will use modern radios in the planes.

CELEBRATE: See you on Sunday to help us fly and celebrate. Bring your own picnic and make it an afternoon of Fun Fun Fun !

Valley RC Fun Fly

The VRCMC Fun Fly this past weekend was a blast ! We had 29 Entrants with each class well represented. Experts-13, Sportsman-11, Junior-5. WOW ! It was great seeing first-time contest flyers learning why a Fun Fly Contest is mostly fun with minimal contest jitters.

Does anyone have a decent picture of the full-scale Beechcraft Fly By on Saturday ? If you do please email the file to me. Thanks !

Spectators were there all weekend too so we may see some membership increase in the future. One person joined on Sunday – Mike Peterson from Dushore PA area.

We expect more visitors at our Wednesday evening at 6pm and Sunday Afternoon at 3pm flying sessions at RTP Field. If you have Buddy Box capabilities and trainer planes please bring them to these sessions. Hope to see you there this evening.

I would like to Thank Paul Buckthal and Jeff Roark for their efforts this past weekend giving stick time and simulator time to the public !

There will be a more detailed Fun Fly Report later in the week.

THANKS TO ALL FOR SUPPORTING OUR 44th FUN FLY AND CONTEST !            FUN  FUN  FUN !!!

REMINDER: Work Bee at RTP Field on SATURDAY May 21 at 1pm.

Our Field Work Bee has been set up for Saturday May 21 at 1pm. Bring your own food & drink and something to fly after the work is done.

Field will already be mowed by then. We will prob mow that day. IF MIKE MCGUIRE CAN BRING HIS ZERO-TURN MACHINE TO DO THE PERIMETER AREAS THAT WOULD BE GREAT !!

We will be cutting brush around the field so small chain saws, or big ones, weed wackers with blades, sickles, sithes, hedge trimmers, pruning tools and maybe ladders to reach higher branches on trees along our parking lot would be the equipment we need. We will be moving our older shed and replacing it with a larger shed but that will be done some other day in early June.

SEE U ON MAY 21st !!! THANKS FOR YOUR HELP !

BRING SOMETHING TO FLY AFTER THE WORK IS COMPLETED !

Club Meeting Wed. May 4th -Round Top Park Opens May 14th

Our final indoor Club Meeting for the spring is this coming Wednesday at 7pm. We’ll be at Snyder School in the hallway outside the Dave Port Room at 7pm. One decision we have to make is who to make our annual $$ donation to.
Round Top Park opens for the season on Saturday May 14. Our field only needs some minor gardening, rolling and grass cutting to call it good.
Of course we have small trees and brush to remove at the southeast side of the runway. They just keep growing. Good news is our mild winter was so dry a lot of weeds died off so the brush is quite accessible. Blade equipped weed wackers and small chain saws would be good tools to bring to the May Work Bee. We’ll set the date at the WednesdayMeeting. May be on May 8 ???

Valley R/C Fun Fly plans – July 23-24, 2016

VRCMC Members have decided to continue with both competition events and open flying at our July event this year. We had a good number of entrants in 2015 and most flew in the contest as well as did open flying. We will continue to have one flight circle for the 3 contest events and the other flight circle will be open flying all week-end. We will have 3 classes of competition, Expert, Sportsman and Junior. We will not have any special events. We will give our judges a break and just have open flying at both circles during the time previously devoted to special events.

In 2017 we may go to just some fun events along with open flying instead of the 3 classes of competition but that will be determined based on the 2016 events we host and attend.

    Thanks, Dan L & VRCMC

RTP Pond Area Expansion Project

Take off 1 was aborted due to rough terrain.

Take off 2 went OK with lots of altitude real quick.

Fun Cub on 4-cell lipo saved the day.

The camera shows too much of the float but the floats helped me see and aim the plane at altitude.

The landing was a thread the needle between the trees right at me with a flip over after touchdown.

Of course that was the way I planned for it to land.

Fun Fun Fun
