President’s Corner January 2012

2011 was yet another good year, most are.

Major events included the annual Fun Fly, run successfully by Jim Champion. Cooking by Dean Luchaco went well. We even made some money this year under the careful eye of Dean. Thanks to our donors and workmen. The Public Air Show was, however, blown away.

Flying activity continues, about average this year. Several new members are helping to keep things active, thanks Mike and Walt. Help for training is available and being used.

Our new internet site is up and running well, THANKS Howard. It has even attracted international attention. Data, pictures and contributions are appreciated.

The annual treks to the WRAM show and to Toledo came off as usual and without injury. The Canadian fly in continues of claim a few good planes.

The field is in good condition. Everyone is enjoying having the sun at our backs. The main kite eating trees have been removed. Now its stump removal time.

Indoor flying continues to be popular at Athens Middle School, thanks to Carl Shay. Participation is up and expenses should break even. Foam planes are still in use, but smaller bind and fly planes are multiplying rapidly and becoming increasingly maneuverable. Flights are twice a month on Tuesday evenings.

In a major development, the Blue Swan Airport has been sold and a new winter flying site will need to be found after countless years. The car section also seems to have ended.

Helicopters remain pretty popular and glow planes still persist for stunt and contest activity, however, the transition to electric flight continues. Also 2.4 Gig. Radios have pretty much taken over tho there are a few teething problems. Several good planes, as usual, have retired. Simulators have been very helpful to the new members and some old ones. The internet has been an increasing influence on the hobby in many ways speeding the pace of change. Pod casts are available to true r/c addicts.

Friday night “Shop Night” remains popular during the really cold, dark and windy nights of winter, thanks to Steve Luchaco.

Dan Luchaco’s electronic newsletters continue to keep everyone updated and informed about hobby events. Formal club meetings are every other month with many informal gatherings in between. Carl Shay’s missives continue to keep us informed about the world around us. (some things never change)
